Colombia eyes becoming Latin American gateway

Colombia is eyeing becoming a gateway to Latin America on the back of 5.7% annual growth in shipping over the last decade.

Colombia’s Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Sergio Diaz-Granados told the attendees of the XXII Latin American Congress of Ports 2013, for Colombia to become a gateway to Latin America, it needs: "More trade, more transport and therefore more employment and development in port areas of the country, and in the logistics sector, which has become an increasingly prominent role in the national and international levels".

Speaking about Colombia’s shipping sector, Diaz- Granados said that “between 2003-2012 shipping had an average annual growth rate of 5.7% and thanks to the measures taken by his portfolio such as Simultaneous Inspection System (SIIS) and the System Foreign Trade 7/24, this trend will continue during 2013. "With these systems are adapting logistics in ports providing flexibility to port operations, so that the ports of Colombia are consolidated as a gateway to Latin America,"

The congress is organised by the American Association of Port Authorities in the city of Bogotá, Colombia.

The three-day meeting will have a combination of conferences and exhibitions with international experts addressing such issues as, the world economy and its impact on the international ports business; the integration of Latin American ports with the world; security as a necessary requirement to competitiveness; and port infrastructure and port projects in the Americas.
