Colombia's Santa Marta first non-European Ecoport

Colombia's Santa Marta first non-European Ecoport
The Colombian port of Santa Marta became the world’s first port outside Europe to receive the label Ecoport, certified by Lloyd’s Register and awarded by the European Foundation ECO SLC.

“Santa Marta port organisation has implemented every environmental management policy, performance indicators and evidence of [its] ability to deliver continuous improvements of environmental quality,” ECO SLC Chairman Herman Journee told Seatrade Global before the ceremony that took place in Bogota during the AAPA’s 20th Latin American ports congress.

According to Journee, the "EcoPort" status is obtained upon completion of a Self-Diagnosis-Method (SDM) checklist. The port is awarded for providing data on the performance of its environmental management programme and for contributing in areas such as up-to-date maintenance of the ECOSLC International Benchmark of performance. Additional credit is provided to ports that are certified with PERS, the only port-sector specific environmental management standard, and ISO 14001.

“This award presented to Santa Marta is a benchmark event,” said Journee as Santa Marta general manager Mario Suarez received the award. The port of Santa Marta includes three terminals, a coal terminal, a multipurpose terminal and a container terminal in association with Seattle-based SSA Marine and totalled sales in 2012 for $100m.
