Georgia Ports Authority moves record 3.14m teu
The US’ Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) reports a record 3.14m teu of container throughput throughout the 2014 fiscal year, an increase of 6.3% over the previous year.

The news represents the first fiscal-year in GPA’s history that box-handling has reached over 3m teu. Total tonnage for the 12 months ending June 30 was 29.4m teu, an increase of 8%, equivalent to 2.17m tons.

“Our ports’ success is a win for us all, and a direct result of Georgia’s commitment to the GPA and support for critical port infrastructure projects such as the harbor deepening and enhanced access to I-95 and I-16,” said Nathan Deal, governor of Georgia. “Georgia’s deepwater terminals support jobs, investment and economic development in every county across the state.”

The group also recorded 700,702 units of Ro-Ro traffic handled, a further record, which comprised 674,327 units from the Port of Brunswick and 26,375 from the Savannah Ocean Terminal.

Further, breakbulk cargo grew 5.2% in the 2014 fiscal year, amounting to an increase of 129,861 tons, to 2.63m tons in total, while bulk cargo grew 8.4%, or 212,086 tons, to 2.73m tons.

“Our ports support a broad range of industries, ranging from forestry and food production to auto manufacturing and retail,” said GPA executive director Curtis Foltz. “The additional cargo attracted to Georgia in FY14 speaks to the powerful and growing impact Georgia’s ports have on the state and region.”
