Georgia Ports post 8% growth in FY2014 first half
The Georgia Port Authority (GPA) has reported an 8% growth in tonnage handled for the first half of the 2014 financial year, over the same period in 2013.

“Strong volumes in container traffic, bulk cargo and auto and machinery units for the month of December contributed to this successful mid-year report,” said GPA executive director Curtis Foltz.

GPA reported a 7.4% increase in throughput, to 235,311 teu in December 2013, 16,183 more than in December 2012. Meanwhile, bulk trade improved by 10%, reaching 325,020 tonnes in December, an increase of 29,814 tonnes year-on-year. Throughout the first six months of the 2014 financial year, GPA hauled 1.35m tonnes of bulk cargo, an 11.7% increase, equivalent to 141,806 tonnes.

Meanwhile vehicle and machinery traffic increased by 4.3% in December, to 57,171 units, a 2,343-unit improvement. Georgia’s Colonel’s Island terminal in Brunswick and Ocean Terminal in Savannah have moved 343,065 units in the financial year-to-date, up 6.8%, or 21,922 vehicles.

“Our tremendous growth highlights the increasing importance of the Ports of Savannah and Brunswick to the nation’s international commerce,” said chairman Robert Jepson. “We are well prepared to take on even greater responsibility: We are handling 3m teu a year in Savannah, but we can move up to 6.5m teu without increasing our physical footprint.”
