Hanjin Shipping will quit calling at Terminal 6 in the Port of Portland on 9 March. According to ICTSI Oregon the decision was, “Due to the sustained and deliberate actions of ILWU workers is a significant blow to the regional economy and will cause substantial disruption to many local businesses, workers and consumers.”
ICTSI’s dispute with the ILWU dates back to 2012 when the terminal operator said a “high ranking” ILWU official “promised to send Terminal 6 carriers, including Hanjin, ‘packing’ if ICTSI Oregon did not assign work to ILWU members that was controlled by the Port of Portland and historically performed by another union”.
It claimed a campaign waged by the ILWU since then had reduced productivity at the terminal to the lowest level on the US West Coast.
Despite the setback in losing Hanjin ICTSI Oregon said it remained committed to running Terminal 6 at the Port of Portland.
“With 20 years remaining on our lease and partnership with the Port of Portland, ICTSI Oregon will continue serving our remaining shipping customers. We will also aggressively pursue new direct service for local businesses to Asia and other locations,” the terminal opeartor said.
ICTSI Oregon is a unit of International Container Terminal Services Inc (ICTSI) headquartered in Manila.
