IMO selects DNV to assess US LNG potential

IMO selects DNV to assess US LNG potential
The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has chosen Det Norske Veritas (DNV) to research the potential of LNG as a fuel in the North American Emission Control Area (ECA).

The study will assess a number of factors including ship types and routes, current and planned LNG infrastructure, the regulatory regime, technology readiness  and key enablers. This gathered knowledge will then be used to identify the necessary conditions for the adoption of LNG as a fuel in the area.

“In developing LNG as an alternative fuel for short sea shipping, we foresee significant market opportunities for manufacturers, ship designers, and yards with focus on LNG technology. DNV’s involvement in research and innovation in LNG supply, storage, engines and emission issues has demonstrated that ship safety, market mechanisms, and operational regularity can be maintained when operating ships on LNG," said Tony Teo, DNV’s US technology and business director in the US."

Of the 38 LNG fuelled ships currently in operation worldwide, 36 are classed by DNV.

"There are many variables and risks that have to be assessed and managed first, and we hope this study will contribute to this,” added Teo.
