LNG powered boxship wins Nor-Shipping award

LNG powered boxship wins Nor-Shipping award
A design for a 3,100 teu containership running entirely on LNG has won the prestigious “Next Generation Ship” award at Nor-Shipping 2013.

The award takes into account the design’s dramatically lower emissions relative to a comparable bunker-fuelled ship. The vessel, designed by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME), as part of a two-vessel order from TOTE Shipholdings and to be constructed at General Dynamics NASSCO, is expected to be the largest of any type in the world to be powered by LNG. The build will feature a MAN D&T ME-GI slow-speed engine.

Construction of the first vessel is expected to commence in Q1 2014, with delivery slated for Q4 2015. An option is included for three additional ships.

The design was picked from a stable of four nominees, which consisted of lightweight battery-powered ferry ZeroCat, diesel-electric and battery-powered PSV Edda Fides, and Deltamarin’s efficiently designed bulker B.Delta.
