Mississippi re-opens after multi-vessel collision

Mississippi re-opens after multi-vessel collision
The Mississippi River has been re-opened to all traffic following a multiple vessel collision.

The Maltese-flag bulker Flag Gangos lost power and steering near Gretna last Tuesday evening and subsequently collided with the Liberian-flagged vessel Pamisos and the barge Web 235, both carrying out transfer operations at International Matex Tank Terminals.

According to the US Coast Guard (USCG) there was some spillage of oil when the barge broke free in the collision. Both the Pamisos and the barge were damaged in the accident but no injuries were reported.

An oil boom was deployed and the Coast Guard implemented one-way traffic in the vicinity of the International Matex Tank Terminals near Gretna.

The USCG said that the river was re-opened to all traffic at 1400hrs with the Flag Gangos no longer impeding traffic.

The Coast Guard said it was investigating the incident.
