Strike at APM Terminals in Callao, Peru costs exporters $50m

Longshoremen had been on strike since Monday 18 May over a dispute by workers on the implementation of an electronic system of nominations. Currently, the union distributes the tasks among its members. The terminal management wants to change that to make the system more efficient.

The Peruvian newspaper El Comercio said that the increasing violation of the mechanisms of control and security in the port itself favours the infiltration of cocaine export cargo containers and other criminal acts reported in recent days. If these facts are not corrected promptly and decisively, they will damage the image of Peru abroad, as well as the growth of future exports, said Eduardo Routledge, Chairman of ADEX.

Cargoes owners and transport companies and officials of APMT, according to the newspaper El Comercio, have been receiving death threats. The Association of Exporters calls on the relevant authorities to take control of the situation and create conditions for a final settlement for port operations to restart immediately.
