#thankyouseafarers - The Day of the Seafarer 2014
The IMO’s annual Day of the Seafarer 2014 is being marked today 25 June with a move to get people to show their appreciation of the unseen role of seafarers in our daily lives through social media.

The campaign hashtagged #thankyouseafarers sees people being asked to complete the sentence “Seafarers brought me…”

“Think of something you own and which came by sea. Whether it’s the car you drive, the food you eat, the clothes you wear, the gadgets you use or the furniture you sit on, write it down and post it, adding the hash tag "thank you seafarer." If you can also post a photo or video, even better,” said IMO secretary-general Koji Sekimizu.

Wednesday morning sees a growing number of hashtagged posts on Twitter both from individuals and major corporations such as Teekay and Magsaysay recognising the contribution of seafarers.

There is also a virtual wall on the IMO website where people can write down what seafarers brought to them.

Separately the Maritime Piracy Human Response Programme called on the industry to remember seafarers being attacked and kidnapped by pirates on the Day of the Seafarer 2014 and the 38 seafarers still held hostage around the world.
