Topping the list of the percentage of laid-up vessels is the PSV segment with 36% estimated to be stacked, while AHTS followed closely behind with an estimated 33% laid-up.
In the mobile offshore drilling unit (MODU) space the hardest hit according to VesselsValue is the semi-submersible rig sector with 31% in lay-up. Surprisingly given the volume of speculative orders jack-up rigs had the lowest percentage of the fleet in lay-up with just 17% stacked.
VesselsValue stressed however in the explanation of how it arrived at its numbers that it was an inexact science.
VesselsValue senior offshore analyst Charlie Hockless explained: “Estimating the number of vessels in lay-up is an imperfect science, however, using a big data approach VesselsValue can provide a valid estimation using the following methodology.
“VesselsValue observes the recency of a vessel's AIS signal and filters the data appropriately. Vessels that have not signalled for over a week are considered to be in lay-up.”
