Belawan container port sees 15% increase in H1 throughput
North Sumatra's Belawan International Container Terminal (BICT) has posted almost 15% growth in throughput to 463,281 teus in the first half of this year, local media quoted port operator Pelindo I as saying.

Spokesman Muhammad Eriansyah was quoted as saying traffic is predicted to continue increasing because Belawan is the main port gateway in Sumatra and it plays a vital role in supporting the national logistics chains.

For the whole of 2012, Belawan recorded volume of 853,388 teus.

In anticipation of future demand, Pelindo I plans to start the IDR 3trn ($291.5m) BICT expansion project by the end of this year. This will expand Belawan’s yard from 950 meters to 1,650 meters, add a 30 hectare container yard, 24 units of transtainers and eight container cranes.

Currently, BICT has a total capacity of 1.2m teus.
