Busan port handles higher box volumes in August
South Korea’s Busan port has handled higher box throughput in August over the same period of last year, according to figures released by Busan Port Authority (BPA) on Sunday.

Busan port moved 1.53m teu of containers in August, an increase of 5.5% year-on-year. Among the total, 751,097 teu came from import/export cargoes and 779,935 teu were from transhipment cargoes.

For the first time, the monthly throughput at the port maintained a 1.5m teu level for five consecutive months since the monthly volume surpassed 1.6m teu in March, BPA noted.

“We will make concerted efforts to attract high value-added transhipment cargo and will also play a role as an import/export gateway,” said Park Chung-sik, operation director at Busan port.

In the first eight months of 2014, Busan port recorded a total throughput of 12.19m teu.

Last year, Busan port posted an annual throughput of 17.69m teu, making it the fifth busiest container port worldwide. The BPA is aiming to move 18.2m teu this year.
