The 200 river LNG container vessels of 36 teu each are currently being built at a Chinese yard based in Huzhou, Zhejiang province.
The use of the LNG-powered container vessels is part of the Chinese State Council’s goal of transforming and upgrading the inland vessel fleet so as to reduce harmful air emissions.
The introduction of LNG-powered vessels is also in line with China’s 2015-2020 action plan, under which the coountry will establish emission control areas for ships and other waterborne vessels.
The plan has spelled out targets for ships and port pollution prevention and control, covering coastal and inland river ports and docks, and at shipyards.
