Noburu Ueda, chairman and president of ClassNK, said that as with all casualties of this scale, the classification society has established a special Casualty Investigation Team to address and investigate the matter.
The Casualty Investigation Team is currently working closely with the shipowner, flag authorities and other involved parties in order to respond to the situation and investigate the cause of the accident.
Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) is the owner of the containership built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) while the vessel is classed by classification society ClassNK. The MOL Comfort accident is especially worrying for the Japanese government as it involves three major Japanese companies.
“MOL has been tied up with the rescue operations and the investigation process has already started,” Ueda told Seatrade Global.
MOL updated on Thursday that tugboats and a patrol boat have made their way to the accident site to carry out rescue and tow operations.
The container carrier said there was no large volume of oil leakage and some containers were lost or damaged during the accident.
