Colombo Dockyard benefits from building OSVs
Colombo: Sri Lanka-based Colombo Dockyard reaped profits in 2012 as it benefitted from higher margins from the construction of offshore support vessels (OSVs).

The shipbuilder said its focus on building high quality support vessels for the oil and gas industry had brought benefits.

“Our focus on shipbuilding for the OSV market segment has held us in good stead in that the strategic diversification decisions taken many years ago have seen us charter into niche areas,” said Akihiko Nakauchi, chairman of Colombo Dockyard, a unit of Japan's Onomichi Dockyard Co.

In 2012, the yard delivered an anchor handling tug supply (AHTS) vessel and two multi-purpose platform supply vessels (PSVs).

Four PSVs are to be completed this year and another one in 2014. Mangala Yapa, managing director of Colombo Dockyard, said the yard capacity has been fully utilised until the end of 2013.

In the year ended 31 December 2012, the company reported net profit of INR1.9bn ($34.7m) up 28% year-on-year. Full year revenue came up to INR16.3bn, up 28% from 2011.
