The Finnish company has ordered two 1,400 teu capacity, dual-fuel, boxships for delivery in 2017, adding to an earlier order for two similar vessels to be delivered in 2016.
The vessels are to built in China with main engines from Wartsila and be owned and technically managed by GNS Shipping/Nordic Hamburg and chartered long-term by Containerships.
“Our new ships will not just meet, but exceed all environmental standards in the Emission Control Area (ECA)where we operate. On top of this, with the gas mode, the engines are Tier III compliant with the upcoming IMO emission regulations for SECA areas also regarding NOx,” said Kari-Pekka Laaksonen, ceo of Containerships.
The company is also planning to invest in a fleet of LNG powered trucks in Finland, UK and Russia. Total investment of its land and sea assets are valued at EUR250m – 300m.
It added they would be the first European shortsea operator to run LNG-powered vessels.
“It is important to emphasise that in order to meet future regulations, most competitors on the market will use alternative solutions, such as marine gas oil with decreased sulphur content. These options do not require the same level of investment as the solution Containerships has chosen,” he said.
“Our strategy is to stay well ahead of the curve when it comes to environmental regulations, and to be a pioneer in eco-friendly shipping while continuing to offer customers the best value for money.”
