In 2009 ClassNK embarked on a large scale R&D programme, in addition to its own research, working with a wide range of international partners on joint projects.
Speaking at a Green Technologies Seminar in Hong Kong, co-organised by ClassNK and Seatrade, Ueda noted the industry faced many challenges such as low freight rates and fluctuating asset prices.
However he stated, “Through all this uncertainty is the need for a greener and more eco-efficient operation. To achieve this investment in new technologies is essential.
“By harnessing the skill and experience of the entire industry through joint R&D we can develop solutions that help owners and op comply with new regulations while also benefit from saving through increased efficient operation.”
According to Ueda since 2009 the classification society has supported some 330 joint projects and is in talks with partners to carry out a further 50 projects.
“Our approach to innovation is an all encompassing one. Working together with shipowners, shipyards, academic institutions and manufacturers we can work on solutions that address the diversify challenges that effect each sector of the maritime industry,” he explained.
“This entire operation is mutually beneficial, the industry gets access to new innovative solutions that may not otherwise have been developed, and for ClassNK we are further our mission of safety and environment protection.”
