Cosco Holdings loses $1.5bn in 2012

Cosco Holdings loses $1.5bn in 2012
Hong Kong: Chinese shipping giant China Cosco Holdings narrowed its net loss in 2012 to RMB9.56bn ($1.54bn) from RMB10.50bn the year before although that will provide cold comfort as the company continued to struggle with revenue rising just 4.4% to RMB88.33bn.

Revenue from the dry bulk continued to slide falling by a third from already weak levels last year down to RMB16.03bn on continued weakness in the market as freight rates declined and shipping capacity decreased from 374 to 332 ships. This segment saw the operating loss widen to RMB7.77bn from RMB5.42bn in 2011.

The container shipping sector fared slightly better with revenue rising 17% to RMB48.42bn, as container shipping volume rose 16% amounted to 8,016,241 teus. The container segment still posted an operating loss of RMB1.53bn though, although this was an improvement from RMB6.36bn in 2011.
