Cosco Pacific sees Bohai Rim volumes fall 6% in October

Cosco Pacific sees Bohai Rim volumes fall 6% in October
Major port operator Cosco Pacific has also seen poorer performance in the lead-up to the high season with its key Bohai Rim ports posting a 5.6% drop in volume to 2.14m teu from 2.26m teu previously. While the other important region of the Pearl River Delta seeing a slight 1.6% fall to 1.68m teu.

The major hits came from its key Hong Kong terminals Cosco-HIT and Asia Container Terminals, which saw falls of 10.2% and 23.2% respectively from the previous corresponding quarter.

In the northern Bohai Rim region, throughput at Dalian Port plunged 25.5% to 175,200 teu while at the major hub of Qingdao volumes ticked 5.4% lower to 1.42m teu.

Repeating previous months’ patterns, the only region to see an increase was the Southeast Coast, where terminals in Quanzhou and Xiamen are ramping up aggressively, putting in 21.1% and 61.1% rises in volume, albeit from very low sub-100,000 teu bases. The region saw throughput rise 12.6% to 379,500 teu in October.

Meanwhile the eastern coast Yangtze River Delta region saw volumes fall 8.1% to 737,800 teu and Cosco Pacific’s overseas port saw throughput rise 6.2% to 836,000 teu partially due to good performance at Piraeus Container Terminal, which saw volume rise 10.7% to 277,900 teu.
