The cooperation between the two shipbuilders is expected to bring about cost savings through joint purchase of equipment and use of facilities.
CSBC’s executive vice president Wang Hai Taw had told Seatrade Maritime News in an exclusive interview in June that it was looking to set up a joint venture shipbuilding and equipment production facility in China.
Wang added that the joint venture will first start off as a ship equipment production yard before offering shipbuilding services.
At present, privately-owned Yangzijiang has three yard facilities, namely Jiangsu New Yangzi, Jiangsu Yangzi Xinfu and Jiangsu Yangzijiang, while CSBC has two yards in Kaohsiung and Keelung.
Local media reported that the collaboration could see CSBC using Yangzijiang’s facilities to build certain sections of the 14,000 teu containerships.
