After five years of development work, the two companies came up with a new high quality high manganese steel designed for applications of extreme low temperature conditions such as LNG storage systems.
DSME and Posco said the new technology is expected to significantly increase their price competitive edge in end-user industries such as shipbuilding as the new material is 53% more cost effective compared to existing cryogenic materials.
DSME will apply the new manganese steel to its own developed LNG storage tanks as well as the next-generation LNG carriers and LNG FPSOs.
The mock-up of the new manganese steel applied LNG storage tanks is scheduled to be unveiled at the shipbuilder’s Okpo shipyard in the second half of this year with a demonstration test of it in extreme low temperature conditions.
