Evergreen distances itself from distressed alliance member Hanjin Shipping
Evergreen Line has reacted to Hanjin Shipping’s downfall by saying it will not use the latter’s ships to carry its cargoes, as the two lines are currently partners in the CKYHE Alliance.

Taiwan’s container line Evergreen said it is “well prepared in responding to the crisis and a contingency plan has been activated.”

The Taiwanese line announced that none of its cargoes will be loaded on vessels operated by South Korea’s Hanjin Shipping, and Hanjin Shipping’s cargoes will also not be allowed to load onto ships operated by Evergreen.

Evergreen assured cargo owners that it will issue the bill of lading for the shipment under Evergreen’s custody, and will undertake all carrier’s obligations and responsibilities under the governing bill of lading clauses.

Evergreen and Hanjin Shipping are presently part of the five-member CKYHE Alliance, including China’s Cosco, Japan’s K Line and Taiwan’s Yang Ming.

Hanjin Shipping has filed for bankruptcy under mounting debts, during the protracted slump in the global container shipping sector.
