Golden Ocean claimed that the new dry bulk carrier designs provided by the JMU will incorporate the latest technology available in order to secure fuel efficiency. The supramaxes are scheduled to be delivered during the first quarter of 2015.
“The board is of the opinion that it has obtained favorable terms, attractive pricing and considers risk/reward as attractive from a historical perspective,” Golden Ocean said in a statement on Tuesday.
Financial details of the deal were not disclosed but the supramax newbuilding prices have been averaging $25m to $27m in today's market, according to shipbrokers.
Golden Ocean is part of Fredriksen's group of companies that have started a series of newbuilding orderings for bulkers in recent weeks. Frontline 2012, led by Fredriksen, almost doubled the number of orders for new ships to 53, from 28 at the end of last year.
Frontline 2012 recently confirmed an option for four more capesize bulkers at STX Dalian's yard, doubling from an existing four firm orders. The company has further options for four more units at the yard.
Meanwhile, Knightsbridge Tankers, another of Fredriksen's shipping company, is slated to accept delivery of two capesize carriers from JMU in 2015.
