HIT gives workers a 5.5% pay rise

HIT gives workers a 5.5% pay rise
Major Hong Kong terminal operator Hongkong International Terminals Limited (HIT) said agreements had been reached with external contractors on service contracts for 2015-2016 which will see them getting a 5.5% increase in basic salary beginning from May.

The increment is above the 2014 inflation rate of 4.4% and amounts to a 26.9% cumulative pay increase over the past three years and 44.9% increase over the past five years. HIT said some 95% of workers have already accepted the increment.

In recent years, the company has strengthened communication with external contractors and workers and made significant improvements to the working environment. When setting the terms of the 2015-2016 service contracts, HIT took into consideration the pay increase offered by external contractors, the business outlook, the companyís performance, and the operating environment for the company and the industry, it said in a press release.

The operator was hit by a 40-day strike two years ago that resulted in a 9.8% pay increase for workers although they had demanded a pay hike of more than 20%.
