HK port November container volumes up 10%

HK port November container volumes up 10%
The Port of Hong Kong saw its second consecutive month of throughput increases in November, with the number of containers handled rising 10.1% to 1.76m teu but once again off a low base of 1.60m teu in the previous corresponding period. This however just about brings it back on par with the level achieved in November 2014 of 1.78m teu and essentially constitutes a normalisation of the annualised figures.

For the year-to-date, throughput is still down 4.0% at 17.76m teu and the port is set for yet another year of slow decline and sub-20m teu volumes.

At the main Kwai Tsing terminals, throughput rose 10.3% to 1.37m teu from 1.24m teu previously. Meanwhile at the non-Kwai Tsing terminals growth slowed to 9.5% with 390,000 teu moved, compared to throughput of 356,000 teu in the previous corresponding period. Throughput at the mid-stream terminals had spiked 30.6% in October due to an exceptionally low base the previous year.
