Hong Kong port Aug container volumes down 2%

Hong Kong port Aug container volumes down 2%
The Port of Hong Kong saw an unexpected drop in August throughput, with volumes falling 2% to 1.76m teu. This is the first monthly fall since January, and the port had been registering good gains all through the year as it seemed to recover from last year's slump.

The poor figures were from plunging volumes at the mid-stream terminals as the main Kwai Tsing terminals still saw a 4% rise in volumes to 1.34m teu.

The non-Kwai Tsing terminals however saw throughput plunge 16% to 420,000 teu. This could be due to seasonal weather effects as Hong Kong was battered by two major typhoons in August which would have affected the operations of the mid-stream operators more.
