Hong Kong sees box throughput rises 2.8% at main terminals
Hong Kong port started 2014 on a slightly brighter note with January throughput at its main Kwai Tsing terminals rising 2.8% to 1.56m teu from 1.52m teu in January last year.

Although this was off a low base in the weak prevailing conditions of last year, it was also higher than the 1.53m teu handled in January 2012. It was also a slight rise month-on-month from the 1.55m teu seen in December 2013.

The slowdown in the feeder trade at the non-Kwai Tsing terminals continues however with throughput plunging 18.4% to 440,000 teu from 539,000 teu in the previous corresponding period. As a result, overall throughput at the port fell 2.7% to 2.0m teu from 2.06m teu in January 2013.

The volumes handled at these terminals have seen huge volatility from month to month in the past two years, but have been generally on a declining trend.
