IMO sec-gen inaugurates new Russian training centre
IMO secretary-general Koji Sekimizu has inaugurated a Transas simulation complex for tanker personnel, at the Makarov Training Centre in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Opened as part of the conference "Maritime Education: Trends and Challenges of the 21st century" at Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime, the centre offers individual and crew training for tanker cadets and seafarers, in compliance with the requirements of STCW convention chapter V and IMO courses.

The simulator allows for training in cargo handling operations in standard and emergency situations; study of vessel and terminal interaction procedures and major maintenance and safety principles.

Simulators include Transas LCHS 5000 TechSim, which mimics the cargo handling operator station, replicating real vessel and terminal systems. Other courses include tanker systems familiarisation, general arrangement of the tanker and its systems; maintenance of the tanker systems on management level; monitoring systems parameters, and control of the monitoring, alarm and recording systems.

The conference was organised jointly by the Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping and the Federal Marine and River Transport agency, under support of IMO.
