Indonesian ports need to cooperate to compete with Singapore port
The combination of Tanjung Priok Port in North Jakarta and the planned Patimban Port in Subang, West Java, will significantly increase Indonesia's port capacity and it could compete with Singapore, although they will have to cooperate with each other to do so, local reports said.

"The combination of Patimban and Tanjung Priok will make Indonesia able of competing with Singapore," Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi was quoted as saying.

He said the two seaports would have to team up and not compete with each other to make Indonesia's cargo service competitive.

Currently, Tanjung Priok's loading capacity of 6m teu is only 20% of  Singapore's port.

Meanwhile, Patimban Port is designed to have a container capacity of 1.5m teu once it is partially completed in 2019 and 7.5m teu by 2027.

Singapore's new Tuas Terminal, which is tol be developed in four phases over 30 years, will already be able to handle about 20m teu a year in Phase 1, which scheduled to be completed by the early 2020s.

When fully completed, it is expected that the Tuas Terminal could eventually handle 65m annually. Singapore's plan is to move all its port activities to Tuas South from 2027.
