Transportation Minister Ignatius Jonan was set to inaugurate the upgraded coal port as a symbol of the joint commitment and effort to improve synergy among state-owned enterprises, the reports said.
Currently, Tarahan coal port can simultaneously accommodate three vessels with a capacity of 210,000 dwt, 80,000 dwt and 10,000 dwt.
“With its port development, PTBA can compete with coal producers from Australia while at the same time support the government’s maritime sovereignty programme,” the transportation ministry said.
“This can also help push forward the national shipping industry and serve domestic coal needs," it added.
Indonesia plans to increase usage of coal for domestic power production. Previous reports have suggested that domestic coal consumption for power is expected to more than double to 167m tonnes in 2024 from 71m tonnes in 2015.
