Kaohsiung to expand with fourth container terminal

Kaohsiung to expand with fourth container terminal
Taiwan's main seaport Kaohsiung will add 611,000 teu of container handling capacity by 2018 following firm plans to expand a fourth container terminal.

With a maximum container handling capacity of 10m teu a year, Kaohsiung port is in need of a major upgrade as throughput has risen steadily over the years. In 2012, the Taiwanese port moved 9.78m teu of boxes, up from 9.64m teu in 2011.

“In recent years, the trend of containerships getting larger and ports featuring green technologies have prompted the expansion plan for Kaohsiung, giving rise to the need for a fourth container terminal,”Kaohsiung Habor Bureau said in a statement.

The port expansion project, scheduled to start in 2015, is estimated to cost NT$14.31bn ($477.8m), including NT$3.8bn from government coffers and NT$10.51bn from local private investment, according to the bureau.

In the first four months of this year, Kaohsiung moved a total throughput of 3.21m teu.
