LR classes China's first dual-fuel LNG carriers

LR classes China's first dual-fuel LNG carriers
Lloyd's Register (LR) is classing six dual-fuel LNG carriers, to be built by Hudong Zhonghua Shipbuilding, will be the first of their kind to be built in China.

The carriers, whose classification contract was today signed by LR, feature NO96 type LNG containment systems each with up to 174,000 cu m of carrying capacity, and will be fitted with medium speed MAN B&W dual fuel diesel engine (DFDE) systems enabling the ship to burn both gas and fuel oil, supplying power to twin electric motors and twin shafts.

Construction on the first ship is to begin 2014, and will take place at the Jiangnan Changxing Production Line No.1, now the responsibility of Hudong, following parent group China State Shipbuilding Corporation’s (CSSC) re-organisation of production facilities. On delivery – the last vessel to be delivered is scheduled for 2014 - the new LNG carrier orders will be dual-classed by both LR and China Classification Society (CCS) and will sail under the Hong Kong flag.

"This is a big project and a big win for LR,” said Nick Brown, area general manager for Greater China, at the signing ceremony. “Importation of LNG is of strategic and long term importance for China and we welcome this opportunity to provide our expertise. We will now deliver the plan approval and new construction services required to exceed the client's expectations and help ensure that high quality LNG ships are delivered."
