Maersk Container Industry exits China dry container production, looks to reefer business
Maersk Container Industry (MCI) has decided to cease operations at its dry container production facility in Dongguan, China and direct its focus on the cold chain business.

The decision to exit the dry container business has been taken in view of the market’s challenges and pressure for some time. The Dongguan factory has been idle since the start of December 2018.

On the other hand, reefer volumes continue to grow due to global demand for fresh produce and other commodities.

“Regrettably, our decision to focus on the cold chain business will impact our factory in Dongguan which has been idle since the beginning of December due to the tough market conditions,” said Sean Fitzgerald, ceo of MCI.

The company will now fully focus on growing the cold chain business. Currently, one out of three refrigerated containers used in global perishable transportation uses Star Cool Container technology manufactured by MCI.

“By putting all of MCI’s resources on the cold chain business will ensure sustainable growth and continued investment in the best products and services for our customers,” Fitzgerald said.
