Malaysia's MMC earmarks $677m to upgrade Johor ports
Malaysia-based MMC Corp has earmarked MYR2.02bn ($676.83m) to upgrade its ports in Johor in a bid to attract more shipping companies and to stay competitive.

The company plans to spend MYR1.6bn on Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) to increase its box handling capacity to 10.5m teu a year by 2014 from 7.7m teu at present. The PTP upgrades also include two new berths and electrification of its rubber tyred gantries.

It has also allocated MYR421m for Johor port to raise its capacity to 45m freight weight tonnes (fwt) in 2015 from 35m fwt currently, according to Hasni Harun, group managing director of MMC Corp.

“Out if the 7m teu handled by PTP last year, about 6m teu came from Maersk, a few million teu of whose cargo was also handled by Singapore's port. If our ports are ready in terms of capacity and efficiency, those few million teus handled by Singapore may be moved to PTP,” he said.

He added that Johor port's expansion will mainly cater to the growing oil and gas business.
