“MOL will seek LR's counsel about measures to determine the cause and to reinforce the safety of sister vessels through a full cooperation,” MOL said.
The Japanese carrier believed that LR has the relevant experience, knowledge and expertise in approving the design drawings and shipbuilding/post delivery inspections of many large-sized containerships.
A suspected major structural failure led to MOL Comfort splitting into two while underway on the Indian Ocean on 17 June. The cause of the failure on the five-year old vessel remains unknown. The MOL Comfort was classed by ClassNK and built at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI).
The aft section sank on 27 June while the fore section is being towed to the Arabian Gulf.
