NOCC: no fault found in fatal Japan collision

NOCC: no fault found in fatal Japan collision
Norwegian Car Carriers (NOCC) chief Engebret Dahm says no fault has been found against their crew allegedly involved in the crash with fishing vessel Yujin Maru no. 7 on 23 June.

Although the Captain and the third officer of the 57600GT NOCC Oceanic were detained following the incident, “no allegations of misdeeds have been made” against crewmembers of either vessel, Dahm told Seatrade Global.

The update came to light after the company’s Q2 results showed NOK1.5m of “extraordinary administrative expenses” relating in part to the June 23 collision, which took place 300km off the Japanese coastline, which resulted in the Yujin Maru breaking up and sinking. The accident resulted in what Dahm called the “tragic” loss of Yujin Maru's Captain, Hiroshi Yoshizawa, after the search for him was called off.

At the time, the Norwegian firm issued a statement extending its "deepest sympathy with the family of Yoshizawa, and with his colleagues and crew".

Dahm added that “The coastguard has investigated, but no allegations of misdeeds have been made”. However, he added that in any case, the smash occurred outside of Japanese territorial waters, and the local coastguard “would have had no jurisdiction” to bring charges.
