NYK, JMU and MTI develop propeller that reduces CO2 emissions by 1.2%

NYK, Japan Marine United Corp (JMU) and MTI Co Ltd have developed a new propeller that reduces CO2 emissions by 1.2% through more efficient operations.

The propeller to be fitted to two new containerships for delivery in 2019 was developed analysing the actual conditions surrounding the propeller during operations.

The three companies analysed the operation of a propeller in operation on a vessel. “Afterward, they confirmed that the simulation data matched the actual conditions to a high probability. The highly reliable simulation was then used to achieve further optimization of propeller design and thus improve fuel efficiency,” NYK said.

With more efficient operation by observing the cavitation around the propeller the new design is able to fuel consumption and as result lowers CO2 emissions by 1.2%.
