Outspoken S'pore shippers' council chairman John Lu stands down after 18 years
Outspoken shippers’ representative John Lu is standing down as chairman of the Singapore National Shippers’ Council (SNSC) after 18 years.

Lu was chairman of the SNSC from 1997 – 2015 and George Chew was elected as president, a taking over from chairman the council’s AGM on Monday. Lu will remain as honourary president of the council.

He has long been a vocal critic of container lines ability to work together in conferences and alliances, as well as surcharges such as Terminal Handling Charges levied on shippers. Lu was the driving force behind the creation of the Asian Shippers’ Council (ASC) in 2004.

In his message to the SNSC AGM on Monday Lu warned against the power of large alliances that now dominate the East – West trades. “Today, all major carriers in the east – west trade are in one of four alliances, a development unprecedented in the liner shipping industry. This is a cause for concern as the liner industry is possibly the only industry which enjoys immunity from prosecution under anti-trust laws and collective agreements.”
