“It is fair to say that STCW is not really keeping up with requirements,” Neil Bennett, vice president of Transas Americas, said at its Simulation User Conference in Singapore on Tuesday.
Bennett noted there was more demand for non-regulatory training such as DP2 courses.
Under the 2015 amendments to STCW ice class training will come under the convention for the first-time as it will now include the IMO’s new Polar Code.
Owners are also increasingly not content to train their seafarers on generic simulators and Bennett said there had been a growth in demand for type specific training. For a company such as Transas the difficulty this creates is the vast array of bridge equipment that is available in the market.
