Pacific International Lines founder YC Chang honoured with top IMA award
In recognition for championing the promotion of Singapore’s shipping industry since its early years, one of the pioneers of Singapore’s shipping industry, Pacific International Lines (PIL) founder and chairman YC Chang, was conferred the prestigious International Maritime Centre (Individual) Award last night.

Under Chang’s strong leadership, PIL has grown from a company owning four coastal vessels in 1967 to the 18th largest containership operatorin the world now. PIL currently has a fleet of 200 vessels and an extensive network of offices and agencies across 100 countries.

Some 10 other industry awards were also given out by Minister for Transport and Second Minister for Defence Lui Tuck Yew at the International Maritime Awards (IMA) 2015.

Among the recipients, who were recognised for outstanding contributions towards the growth of Maritime Singapore, were Keppel Offshore & Marine Technology Centre, which won the Outstanding Maritime R&D and Technology Award, Sembcorp Marine, which won the Offshore & Marine Engineering Award and Mitsui O.S.K. Bulk Shipping, which won the International Maritime Centre (Corporate) Award.

Other recipients included BP Singapore which won the Bunker Award, Swire Pacific Offshore Operations which won the SRS Ship Owner of the Year Award and Jardine Shipping Services Singapore which won the Maritime Service Provider Award.

Organised by Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), the biennial Singapore IMA recognises individuals and companies for their outstanding contributions to Singapore’s advancement as a premier global hub port and an international maritime centre.

Some 630 luminaries and leaders from the maritime industry gathered at the gala dinner and award presentation ceremony held at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in conjunction with the 10th Singapore Maritime Week 2015.

This year’s Awards attracted a bumper crop of over 150 nominations, reflecting the richness, diversity and quality of Singapore’s maritime sector. Notably, the number of nominations was an increase of about 60% since the first edition in 2006. 

Lui also presented the Maritime Sector Incentive (MSI) awards to 38 maritime companies. The MSI aims to facilitate the growth and expansion of ship owners/ ship operators and maritime service providers in Singapore.
