“Davao port has to be modernized. There is no question about it,” Dominguez said, reiterating that that any delays in the plan could hinder the growth of trade in the region.
Davao City’s international port needs to be expanded to accommodate the fast-growing agricultural trade in the area, he noted.
“Davao’s exports of agricultural products are growing very fast so definitely, they need a better port service,” Dominguez said.
He said any delays in the plan to modernize the port of Davao could slow down the growth of trade in the area, particularly exports of agricultural goods.
Davao is a top exporter of bananas, pineapple, tunas, and desiccated coconut, among others.
A modernization plan for the development of the Davao Sasa port had been previously approved but the Philippine Ports Authority and the Davao local government have tried to shoot it down.
