Philippines domestic container volumes spiked 53% in 2017 to 9.1m teu from 5.9m teu in the previous corresponding period.

The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) said the higher volumes were achieved amid robust shipping and trade activity during the period.

The total volume of cargo at the country’s ports however saw flat growth from January to November 2017, according to local media reports.

PPA said cargo volume reached 227.3m metric tons (mt) in the 11-month period last year from 225.5m mt a year earlier.

While domestic cargo traffic rose by 2.3%, this was offset by flat growth in international cargo traffic.

International vessel calls rose by 1.23% to 11,615 during the reporting period.
