Port of Rotterdam to introduce LNG bunkering incentives

Port of Rotterdam to introduce LNG bunkering incentives
The Port of Rotterdam has set aside a total of EUR1.5m in order to introduce a 10% gross port dues discount for vessels bunkering LNG there.

The scheme, announced by Port ceo Allard Castelein during the second day of the ‘LNG Masterplan final event’,  will apply until 2020. It is intended to encourage vessels to use the Shell LNG bunkering infrastructure being set up at the Port, which includes an LNG bunkering tanker on order from STX Offshore & Shipbuilding Company in South Korea, expected to begin operations from the port in 2017.

Last month, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) called on more global hub ports to develop LNG bunkering facilities, with MPA set to begin its own pilot programme in 2017.

Demand for LNG as bunker fuel, which was expected to soar following the entry into force of the 0.1% sulphur cap in Northern Europe this year, has so far failed to materialise after low oil prices reduced the incentive to invest in expensive retrofits.
