China’s north port operator, Qingdao Port Group, is co-operating with Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries (ZPMC), China Unicom and Ericsson to jointly develop 5G technology for Qingdao port development.

The 5G network has the advantages of low latency, high bandwidth and mass storage capacity. The millisecond latency signal and high-resolution camera data are able to support the wireless control of the crane and high-quality video transmitting. The 5G technology has been applied to port crane operation and container handling, which could greatly improve the terminal operation efficiency and stability.

To improve its operation efficiency and meet the requirements from shippers and shipowners for better cargo handling experience ,Qingdao port is accelerating the construction of an “Intelligent port” and upgrading its automated terminal.

The automatic terminal of Qingdao port commenced operation in 2017, is one of the most advanced automated terminals globally.
