Rail freight not a priority in China: Hutchison
Intermodal rail connections from China ports such as Yantian International Container Terminal (YICT) depend on the national rail network and it seems that the priority at the moment is not on the carriage of cargo, said Hutchison Port Yantian commercial department gm Carmen Leung.

Speaking at the panel on Ports and Shippers at the Asian Logistics and Maritime Conference she added that while YICT's rail network is ready for intermodal connections, it only comprises a small portion of the total network before it needs to move onto the national rails.

While acknowledging that boxes that move by rail comprise only a small portion of YICT's throughput Leung pointed out that "we are actually the only terminal in South China that has on-dock rails". She added: "Rail is not really the priority for cargo carriage in China right now, it's more for passengers and the military I suppose.

"For us, we're getting ourselves ready for the plane to take off, so it's not about the terminal but more the national rail; if they can free up the capacity, we can move forward," she concluded.
