Shanghai posts 16.3% jump in February box volumes
China’s Shanghai port has reported higher container throughput in February on a year-on-year comparison but volumes dropped compared to January due to the Chinese New Year holidays.

February volumes were recorded at 2.57m teu, up 16.3% compared to 2.21m teu handled in the same period of 2014, according to data from Shanghai International Port (Group) Co (SIPG).

Last month’s throughput, however, decreased 18.1% compared to 3.16m teu in January due mainly to the slow down in businesses during the week-long Chinese New Year holidays.

In 2014, the Chinese port took the crown as the world’s busiest container port for the fifth consecutive year with an annual throughput of 35.29m teu, up 4.5% from 33.77m teu in 2013.
