Shell Tankers (Singapore) Pte Ltd (STSL) has signed separate agreements to charter four LNG carriers from Greek shipowner TMS Cardiff Gas and two from Russian owner Sovcomflot.
All six vessels will be 174,000 cu m and powered by XDF propulsion and join Shell’s time chartered fleet.

Grahaeme Henderson, vice president of Shell Shipping & Maritime, said: “We are pleased to have signed these agreements with leading companies such as Sovcomflot and TMS Cardiff Gas Limited. These high technology vessels will give Shell’s trading businesses added flexibility in safely and reliably delivering LNG to our customers around the world.”
On the back of the time charters TMS Cardiff Gas said it had contracted Hyundai Heavy Industries and Samsung Heavy Industries to build four 174,000 cu m LNG carriers for delivery in 2020 and 2021 when they will start the contracts with Shell.
The vessels will be the latest addition to the shipowner’s X Series of LNG carriers bringing the fleet size to 11.

Christos Economou, founder of TMS Cardiff Gas, commented: “We are delighted to have agreed the charter of four new X Carrier Series of LNG ships to Shell. Shell is a very important customer in our expanding LNG Shipping business.
Sovcomflot will also be providing two newbuildings for the contract with Shell. These two LNG carrier newbuildings and associated charters acknowledge our record of providing high quality, safe and sustainable LNG shipping services, using technologically advanced vessels and employing highly experienced crews.”
