Singapore port recorded a 2.9% year-on-year improvement in container volumes in 2013 32.6m teu, making it the world's second busiest box port after China's Shanghai.

Shanghai reported an annual throughput of 33.6m teu in 2013, retaining its dominance since 2010.

In bunkering, Singapore remains the world's largest bunkering port with a runaway volume of 42.68m metric tonnes last year, down slightly from 42.69m metric tonnes in 2012, according to figures from Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).

MPA added that annual vessel arrival tonnage reached 2.33bn gt in 2013, an increase of 3.2% from the 2.25bn gross tonnes achieved in 2012. “Containerships and tankers were the top contributors, each accounting for around 30% of total vessel arrival tonnage,” MPA said in a statement on Tuesday.

The Singapore Registry of Ships also saw tonnage rise by 13.2% year-on-year to 73.6m gross tonnes in 2013, putting Singapore among the top 10 ship registries in the world.

“Singapore is home to about 130 shipping groups. The maritime cluster employs more than 170,000 people and contributes some 7% to Singapore's GDP,” MPA said.
