Singapore shipowners in talks to lower charges for idle offshore vessels
The Singapore Shipping Association (SSA) is in talks with authorities for lower charges for offshore that want idle in the country’s waters when they do not have employment due to the current downturn in the sector.

Speaking at a media briefing on Tuesday SSA president Esben Poulsson that its offshore services committee had expressed concerns over the state of the sector.

“Given that Singapore has become quite a hub for the offshore support industry. With the severe drop in the oil price in the second half of 2014 this has had a huge knock effect on these types of companies,” Poulsson explained

As result vessels such AHTS and supply vessels are only finding employment for 70% of the time, meaning that owners need to idle the vessels in port when they are not working.

“They [the vessels] would like to come into Singapore, and the charges involved we are seeking to reduce somewhat under a different formula. The MPA have been very supportive of these initiatives and it’s an ongoing discussion,” he said.
